2015 Winter: Hong Kong Political History

Overview The ongoing protests of 2014 marked a milestone of Hong Kong political history. Contrary to the mainstream narrative which views the city merely as an international finance and trading hub, Hong Kong has a long history of mass political participation. This course aims to examine the political movements of Hong Kong in 20th century and examine how it was affected by international politics. This course is designed for the general public, but secondary students taking DSE History would also find it highly relevant to the Hong Kong history module. > Details

Public Seminar Series: Chinese Culture & Creative Industries

2014 World Financial History (1600-2014)

Overview During the 19th Century, the caliber of cannons and number of gunboats dictated the might of colonial empires, allowing Great Britain to establish an empire in which the sun never sets. In 1941, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the US, emerging from her previous isolationist tendancies, entered the Second World War, leading Henry Luce, co-founder of TIME magazine, to characterize the 20th Century as the “American Century”.
