Invitation to Film Screening: Xuan Zang
Dear Friends,
In AD 627, the young Xuan Zang headed west to India where he was destined to search for the truth of Buddhism. The route where he left his footprint is the Silk Road.
The Maritime Silk Road Society (MSRS) and Savantas Liberal Arts Academy (SLAA) will be hosting a free screening of the “Xuan Zang” movie for their members, friends and the public. The audience, through reliving Xuan Zang’s adventure in search of Buddhist teachings, will learn about the important role of the Silk Road in cultural exchange.
Featuring Huang Xiaoming as Xuan Zang and Wong Kar-wai as the art director, the movie was directed by Huo Jianqi and written by Zou Jingzhi. It was a co-production between China and India, and was selected as the Chinese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film in the 89th Academy Awards.
“Xuan Zang” is a historical film based on Xuan Zang’s 16-year overland journey to the most remote place in “the West” during the Tang dynasty in the 7th century. Xuan Zang had to endure and overcome many hardships in search of sacred texts and the truth of Buddhism. After a difficult journey, he finally reached India. He spent most of the time there visiting temples and studying Buddhism. From Chang’an to India and vice versa, Xuan Zang brought with him bundles of Buddhist scriptures upon his return to Chang’an, and promoted Chinese culture along the route he travelled.
Members of MSRS, and Students and Alumni of SLAA have priority to register for complimentary ticket(s)* on a first-come, first-served basis. Each eligible person can obtain a maximum of TWO tickets.
