Overview
This course focuses on the close reading of Chinese literary classics, namely the Analects and Zhaungzi, the prose and poetry of Tang and Song dynasty, and historical records of ancient China. Through these ancient texts, students will be familiarized with the vocabulary and context of Classical Chinese text, which will help them tackle related questions in public examinations.
This course will also explore the essays and short stories of modern Chinese writers, such as 余光中、小思、陳之藩、龍應台、胡燕青、也斯、張曼娟. Students will not only learn to appreciate Chinese literature, but are also expected to become more expressive and articulate writers themselves.
Finally, in response to our students’ request, the instructor will include a survey of the diet, architecture, art, and utensils of Ancient China to enable students to learn about abstract ideas of the past through concrete materials.
