Course Overview
This course focuses on the close reading of Chinese literary classics, namely the philosophical texts of the pre-Qin times, the prose and poetry of Tang and Song dynasty, the novels of Ming and Qing dynasty, and historical records of ancient China. Through these ancient texts, students will learn about the intriguing historical figures, lesser-known stories, and famous sayings of Classical China.
In addition, students will be familiarized with the vocabulary and context of Classical Chinese text, which will help them tackle related questions in public examinations.
This course will also explore the essays and short stories of modern Chinese writers, such as 余光中、小思、陳之藩、龍應台、胡燕青、余秋雨、也斯. Students will not only learn to appreciate Chinese literature, but are also expected to become more expressive and articulate writers themselves.
Finally, in response to our students’ request, the instructor will incorporate recordings about Chinese culture as part of a listening exercise as an attempt to introduce the material through another medium.
