Overview

Hong Kong’s “free” economy is highly related to how the political and economic structures were shaped in the colonial era. This course aims to introduce the political and economic activities of British conglomerates, namely: Jardine Matheson, HSBC, and Taikoo. How the ambitious capitalist class from Britain struggled in East Asia will also be discussed. Finally, this course will investigate the social problems that the Industrial Revolution brought about, issues of urban planning and property development, social control as well as Chinese opposition to the colonial government.

The tuition fee is $480 for the entire program. In addition, there is a $200 deposit, which will be returned to students with an 80%+ attendance rate at the end of the program. The total of $680 will be used to reserve a place in the course.
