Overview
This course seeks to provide an introductory overview of the development of Chinese Taoism. Major Taoist literature will be interpreted and selected topics to be critically examined with various scholars’ discourse.

1. The origins of Taoism in Qin Dynasty
2. Overview of Lao-Tzu’s thoughts
3. “Zhuangzi: Carefree Wandering”
4. “Zhuangzi: On the Equality of Things”
5. Huang-lao thoughts and Han-dynasty politics
6. Taoist thoughts and Taoism: “Xiang’er’s Commentary on Lao-Tzu”
7. Neo-Taoism of Wei & Jin dynasties: Thoughts of Wang Bi and He Yan
8. Development of Taoism in Tang dynasty
9. Application of Taoist thoughts within Song dynasty Confucianism
10. Taoist thoughts and Chinese art

Tuition
The tuition fee is $800 for the entire program. There is also a $200 deposit, which will be returned to students with a 80%+ attendance rate at the end of the program (see Attendance below). The total of $1000 is due a week after the student is accepted into the program or before the first class, whichever comes first, and will be used to reserve a place in the course.
