Overview

China during the Republican era underwent tremendous changes, whether in the realms of the political, welfare, ideological, or societal. This course will examine this period through comparison with Japan and the West, and explore its relevance with today’s society.

3. The dilemma of the May Fourth movement

4. Development of Chinese Higher Education, 1928-1937

5. Hong Kong Society in the early Republic years

6. Workers’ Movements of the 1920s-30s

7. Antique Trading in the Republican years

8. The War of Resistance

9. Sino-American relations during the Republican years

10. The woes of Kuomintang according to Chiang’s diary


Eligibility

Adults. Please note that the medium of instruction would be in Cantonese (with some English material).

Tuition

The tuition fee is $800 for the entire program. There is also a $200 deposit, which will be returned to students with a 80%+ attendance rate at the end of the program (see Attendance below). The total of $1000 is due a week after the student is accepted into the program or before the first class, whichever comes first, and will be used to reserve a place in the course.
